Talk Story

“Talk Story” is a pidgin term for sharing stories or discussing topics of interest with friends or relatives.

Three locals enjoy a beverage and talk story at Kapiolani Park in Waikiki.

It’s just “shooting the breeze” or chatting. There is nothing boastful or bragging about “talking story.”

There is a Hawai‘i Creole English or “Pidgin” language that resulted from the blend of Hawaiian and immigrant languages during the sugar plantation era. Pidgin should not be confused with Olelo Hawaii (Hawaiian language).

Hawaii was the first state in the U.S. with its native language as one of its two official languages – Hawaiian and English. Read more about the history of Olelo Hawaii in our Hawaiian Language post.
